Hello, Walnut Grove Lake homeowners,

It has been a fast-paced two months since becoming president of Walnut Grove Lake Home Owners Association. I am learning very quickly about the needs of our neighborhood.

At my first Board meeting in April, I learned that we need more volunteers to make our association strong and our neighborhood pleasant. One of your board members suggested that we establish (or reestablish) committees while expanding some of our current committees. In essence, we need your help.

Here are some examples that could benefit from stronger committee involvement:

• A Beautification Committee for common areas that need mowing and or landscaping. As most of you know several MLGW areas abut Walnut Grove Lake areas yet are our responsibility to mow. We really need a committee to research this and develop a map and schedule for vendors to provide the needed services.

• A Parks Committee to regularly monitor equipment and report maintenance and security issues to the board

• A strengthened Lake Committee to make regular reports on lake conditions and wildlife

I'm sure there are other opportunities, and these are merely conversation starters! The point is, stronger committees will result in stronger involvement, better communication, and a better neighborhood. If you wish to put your skills to work in a particular way, please contact me directly by email, victor_charles@bellsouth.net and introduce yourself!

Be sure to check out the Spring 2019 Newsletter

Sincerely,

Victor Charles President WGL HOA

WGLHA Independence Day Festivities

Saturday, June 29  Hi neighbors. It’s time to get ready for this year’s Independence Day festivities! This year all festivities will be held on Saturday, June 29, except the mailbox judging which will be on Friday, June 28. Following the Fishing Rodeo in the morning and the Boat and Anything That Floats Parade in the early evening, we will again be awed by our annual Fireworks Display.

This year’s fireworks will be fantastic! The show will begin at approximately 9:15 p.m. Three warning shots will be fired five minutes before the fireworks will begin. All parks will be open for picnicking, grilling and/or throwing out a blanket for viewing. Port-a-Potties will be provided.

Gates to the dam will be closed at 2:00pm to allow the pyrotechnics team to set up. There will be NO PARKING ALLOWED in Farrell Park or Simpson Park on that day. If viewing by boat, please stay near the north end of the lake as fallout from the fireworks can cause damage to boats and people, and if you come too close, the Fire Marshall may shut down the display. This is important! Do not bring your boats too close to the dam!

This is the most anticipated and fun-filled event of the year and many families will be hosting parties. Have guests come early to cheer on their favorite boat or grill some hotdogs at the parks. A $60.00 donation is requested from each family to cover the expense of the fireworks. However, a contribution in any amount is greatly appreciated. Checks made out to WGLHA Fireworks can be mailed to Keith Collins, 3036 Centre Oak Way, Germantown, TN  38138. After a day of fishing, boating, eating and playing, we can relax, sit back and enjoy our very own WGL Fireworks!!!

WGLHA July 4th Mailbox Decorating Contest

We are looking forward to another 4th of July mailbox contest at Walnut Grove Lake. This year’s contest theme will be to show some love for Memphis since we are celebrating the bicentennial of our dear city. Any red, white and blue décor showing American pride will be great as well! Please have your mailboxes ready by 3pm on Friday, June 28. I will handout awards on Saturday June 29th.

WGLHA Boat and Anything That Floats Parade

Unique+canoe+Marrtel.jpg

Boats should meet at the fishing pier at the dam by 6:00 p.m. The parade starts there and cruises past the boat landing at Farrell Park, up the east side of the lake showing off their “stuff.” Cross over to the west side of the lake up around the Walnut Grove Road end and come back down the west side and past the judging stand at Dottie Cull and Thara Burana’s home (second point from the dam on lot 18). Then continue on around the lake for the spectators at the parks, and back to the dam to complete the voyage. Margie McMillan will be the “Grand Marshall” to start the parade.

Prize categories are: Most Patriotic, Best Self-Propelled, Best Music, Most Spirited, Best Decorated, Best Kids’ Boat, Best Bribe, Grand Champion, Honorable Mentions, and perhaps a surprise category or two. Awards will be delivered as soon as possible after the parade.

All boats must have WGL + Lot Number on both sides. (That’s how the judges identify the entries.) Spectators can enjoy wonderful views from the boat landing at Farrell Park, Little Park and Simpson Park.
